Life is short but wide - Pam deGaines
Pam was married to my father's brother for a number of years. I didn't really know her growing up, and I thought she was rather weird.
When I was thirteen, she came to visit and brought some statues she'd made of the main characters in Clan of the Cave Bear. She captured Ayla and Iza so perfectly...I covet them still.
My junior year in college, we met at a Thanksgiving gathering and connected in an astonishing way. She was dying of cancer by then. That brief interlude had a tremendous impact on me. I wrote Sister for her.
She'd written a couple of books of cartoons called "Chemo Comics" and one of them has stuck with me since..I've used it as a sig line for years. "Life is short but wide."
